Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Renovation

Project Stats

Introduction

Originally built and commissioned in 1921, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is a mainstay of the city’s entertainment and cultural landscape. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1984, the stadium was previously the official home of MLB’s Los Angeles Dodgers and three NFL teams: the Los Angeles Rams, the Los Angeles Chargers, and the Los Angeles Raiders. It was also the site of the NFL’s Super Bowl I and Super Bowl VII and has hosted the MLB World Series, NBA championships, and many unforgettable big-ticket concerts.

In 2028, the coliseum will host the summer Olympics, making it the first stadium to have hosted three Olympic Summer Games after also hosting in 1932 and 1984.

With a seating capacity of 77,500, the coliseum’s current tenants include the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans football team (NCAA), LA Giltinis (MLR), and Busch Light Clash (NASCAR).

The Project

In 2018, the stadium underwent a significant $315 million renovation to help provide attendees with an exceptional game day, concert, or event experience. Fully funded by USC, the project included premium seating in luxury suites and the 1923 Club, a rooftop deck offering an unparalleled panoramic view of the stadium and the surrounding city. The space would be made available for corporate functions, parties, or other events.

To spearhead the project, USC hired Hathaway Dinwiddie, a leading California construction firm with over 100 years of experience in large-scale building and renovation excellence. Hathaway Dinwiddie brought MSL on board as a construction partner to supply and place rebar at the job site.

MSL’s Approach

This project required the entire MSL team’s extensive knowledge and experience throughout the scheduling, detailing, logistics, and installation phases. We met with the client to learn about the project needs, review drawings, and collaborate on developing the approved solution.

Our office and field teams were on-hand to provide open two-way communication with the client and other stakeholders. We pride ourselves on timely, courteous responses to all client inquiries and ensuring we keep everyone in the loop throughout the project’s lifecycle.

The Results

MSL completed the project on time and under the initial budget. In total, our team installed over 3,000 tons of concrete and steel to help support the successful renovation of the stadium.

We’re proud to have participated in a project that continues to provide exceptional experiences to visitors and residents of one of the world’s great cities.
